On April 10, 2026, the Artemis II mission ended with Orion’s fiery reentry. For about fifteen minutes, the capsule endured temperatures that exceeded 5000oF (2760o C) as its heat shield melted, layer by layer—“shedding” heat away from the capsule to protect its crew.
That’s hard to imagine.
What comes to mind when you hear the word “fire”? Camping? Fire drills? Devastation? Most of us think of fire in more metaphorical terms, like “light a fire under him,” or “she’s playing with fire.” A “trial by fire” is a hardship we’re not prepared to handle.
Life-destroying or life-giving?
Literal or otherwise, when life gets hot enough, we fear something precious to us—our peace, future, security, or sense of identity—will be destroyed. Not unlike Orion’s heat shield.
But God’s creation—and His Word—say otherwise. Let’s see how that works.
Fire breaks chemical bonds.
Fire severed the cords that bound Daniel’s friends in the furnace.
God may use fiery circumstances to release what binds you from moving forward with His plans.
Fire removes what is not meant to be there to begin with.
The first step in purifying metal is to apply high heat to remove its dross.
God may place you in fiery circumstances to remove things you shouldn’t have in your life.
Fire releases energy.
Being in the refining fire of God’s forge not only strips us of the things that are not of Him, it also releases His power in us—the dýnamis that the New Testament describes more than 120 times. (See Acts 1:8 and 2 Corinthians 12:9 for examples.)
Fire encourages growth.
Seeds of hundreds of species of shrubs and trees, including lodgepole pine, giant sequoia, and eucalyptus lie dormant until a wildfire’s heat triggers their germination.
Some parts of us may not be able to grow until God applies heat to our circumstances.
Fire creates new molecules.
Fire doesn’t destroy. It transforms. The burned substance becomes a new material.
Without high heat, silica wouldn’t become glass. Iron ore wouldn’t become steel. Alloys wouldn’t become aerospace materials. And much more.
God’s ultimate goal is to transform you into a “new creation”—to be more Christlike.
What the flames preserve
That’s counterintuitive, right? When we face the flames, we default to scenarios of pain and loss. Yes, the experience can be painful. It can result in short-term loss. But God will not destroy what belongs to Him—and that includes YOU.
God didn’t let Nebuchadnezzar’s fire touch Daniel’s friends. God’s burning bush didn’t consume Moses. God spared Zoar as promised, but His fire destroyed the rest of the Pentapolis (Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim). When God allows a fire in your life, He lets it touch only that which was never meant to stay with you.
That doesn’t mean we will never face hardships, illness, disability, and so on. We live in a fallen world. Suffering happens. Bodies, relationships, and finances break.
But when God places us in the fire, He promises it’s for our good. He keeps us there and walks with us through it until the fire serves His purposes.
I don’t mean to minimize the painful circumstances that so many people face today. But I do offer this hope: some fires do not come to destroy us. Some fires come to reveal and burn away what’s holding us back from being all He wants us to be.
Conclusion
God’s best work happens in the fire of His forge when we surrender our circumstances to Him and let the power of His Holy Spirit work in our lives. His heat is both a tool and a shield—melting what we don’t need while protecting us from what could harm us. So, what if we reframe hardship from His perspective and ask, “God, what do you want me to learn from this?”
That’s easier said than done. But, when you’re in the fire, I encourage you to step back, talk to God, and listen for His still, small voice. You’ll learn something amazing from it.
God, even thinking about Your refining fire scares me. I don’t want to experience it. But if I must, give me Your strength to endure it, learn from it, and come out of it transformed into Your likeness. Amen.
